The Ministry of Health, through the Health Surveillance Directorate, reported during epidemiological week eight of the year 2023, which spans from February 19 to 25, 2023, a deceased person was diagnosed with Mpox, he is a Costa Rican, a 30-year-old male.
The patient was hospitalized in a medical centre and had a history of several underlying pathologies, among them he had received the diagnosis of Mpox 19 days before death, the health centre is awaiting the hospital autopsy.
It is important to indicate that, in the first weeks of the year, there has been a downward trend in confirmed cases, with a peak in epidemiological week six, which reported 16 confirmed cases.
Monkeypox is transmitted through close, sustained, skin-to-skin physical contact. At the moment, the main route of transmission is close skin-to-skin physical contact that occurs during sexual intercourse. Other routes of transmission are: through respiratory secretions in face-to-face conversations and contact with contaminated materials from a sick person, the virus can also be transmitted to the fetus or newborn through birth or early physical contact.
