Dollar General's ability to expand beyond its home country is still being determined. The company has been approaching a saturation point in the U.S. As a result, investors who want a better-defined path for long-term growth have considered other Dollar General similar companies. So which other companies may not be facing obvious limitations on their expansion?
Does retailing suffer during a recession? Many investors might think so. However, many sellers prosper under such conditions by offering necessities at lower prices. Cost-conscious consumers flock to such stores for inexpensive goods. Such is the case with some of Dollar General's competitors.
Dollar General's large footprint gave it pricing power with retailers. It allowed it to bring the country's best-known brands at a low cost. These prices made it appealing to cash-strapped customers. In addition, its proximity and customer selection helped it undercut convenience stores and grocers.

Nonetheless, Dollar General faces some uncertainties. Without an international footprint, the saturation in the U.S. leads to questions about its long-term future. Most consumers have opted for cost-effective companies similar to Dollar General. But what other stores are like Dollar General?
Costco wholesale corporation operates a chain of membership-only big-box retail stores. It was founded in 1976 by James Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman. It has its headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Costco is known for carrying top-quality regional and national brands with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Since it is a bulk retailer, it receives a lower price for bulky buying items and then sells them back to the customer. Therefore, it makes it possible for them to sell products for lower prices than other stores.
Dairy products like milk and cheese are cheaper at Costco than at Dollar General. For example, Costco charges over a dollar less than Dollar General for a gallon of milk. Over the years, the company has grown to over 305,000 employees by 2022 and 847 physical locations throughout the United States.

Costco has subsidiaries all over the globe, for example, Costco travel, Costco Wholesale Canada, and Costco de Mexico, and stores in Australia, Korea, Japan, Canada, and many more.
Target is an American store chain and the seventh largest retailer in the U.S. It is a component of the S and P 500 index with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was first established as the discount division of the Dayton department store in Minneapolis in 1962.
It was formed by Dayton corporation, which ran from 1962-1969 and Dayton-Hudson Corporation from 1969-2000. Target's founder is George Dayton. Throughout its being, Target has managed to offer employment to 409,000 people and over 1900 stores spread out all over the U.S.
Target makes revenue by selling a wide assortment of general merchandise and food through its stores in various U.S cities. Products like bandages are almost 10% cheaper at Target than at Dollar General.

The company has subsidiaries all over the globe, including Shipt, a delivery service; Target Corp India Private, for computer programing services; Dermstore, which sells cosmetic and skin care products. Its products include home furnishings and apparel fabrics, carpeting and rugs, draperies and window shades. Textiles and carpets at Burlington Industries are over 20% cheaper than at Dollar General.
Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation in Bentonville, Arkansas, which operates a chain of hypermarkets, grocery stores and discount department stores in the United States. It was founded by Sam Walton and Bud Walton in 1962 and is now owned by the Walton family.

In 2022, Walmart made 567 billion dollars through its three major segments; Walmart U.S., Walmart International, and Sam's club. Walmart's success can be attributed to its supply chain streamlining fulfilment and cutting costs.
Items like canned vegetables, multivitamins, pain relievers, pet products, and paper products are cheaper there as compared to Dollar General. The company has subsidiaries like Bonobos, an e-commerce-driven apparel company that designs and sells men's wear in New York, and Massmart.
Dollar Tree is an American multi-price discount chain of stores headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia. It operates about 15,115 stores throughout the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada. It was founded by Macon Brock Jr in 1986 and has since managed to have over 193,100 employees.
Dollar Tree is an actual dollar store for the most part, although, with the rise in the cost of living, it recently announced that some items would go for more than a dollar in some locations. It makes money by selling inventory in smaller sizes, selling private label products, locating itself near low-income communities, and keeping staff at a minimum.

The company has subsidiaries like Family Dollar, which has its headquarters in North Carolina, and Greenbrier, which distributes hand and washing detergent, bleach, household cleaners and disinfectants. It ranked on top with slightly lower prices on body wash, pasta, laundry detergent, and coffee.
Is Family Dollar better than Dollar General? Most consumers lean on Family Dollar as most products are cheaper than in Dollar General.
Family Dollar is a chain of stores with over 8,000 locations throughout the United States except for Alaska. It was founded in 1959 by Leon Levine, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States.
Family Dollar makes money by having creative pricing. Many products sold there have a low price but are contained in non-standard packaging. As a result, a customer gets a better deal when the unit price is higher than similar products sold at other retailers. It also sells products in small packages because it encourages customers to make frequent visits.

Items like disinfectants, detergents, bleach and soap are much cheaper at Family Dollar by as much as 20% compared to Dollar General. It has subsidiary companies like Midwood Brands, Family Dollar Services Inc, and Family Dollar tracking company, among others.
Walgreen operates the second-largest phar*macy store chain in the United States behind CVS Health. It specialises in health information, filling prescriptions, health and wellness products, and photo services. Its headquarters are in Deerfield, Illinois, U.S.
Walgreens makes money largely by getting consumers to buy medicine and consumer health goods from its pharmacies. That way, it benefits from population growth and the amount of medicine purchased by a person over time.
Pain relievers are cheaper by over a dollar at Walgreens than at Dollar General. Pregnancy kits are another item that is way cheaper at Walgreens as compared to Dollar General.
Walgreens also has subsidiary companies like Boots, and Duan Reade, known for high-level small store layouts in Manhattan and Drugstore.Com, an internet retailer of health and beauty care products.

Consumers will mostly choose the most affordable stores and companies to buy products. Dollar General similar companies vary in terms of pricing, products and services, among others. Customers who normally opt for pocket-friendly stores will go to dollar general's competitors.
