Georgia football currently has the best coaching staff under head coach Kirby Smart since he took the job in 2015. However, two of those on that staff are guys who continue to find new ways to improve the Dawgs’ football program.
That entire staff does a great job, but offensive coordinator Todd Monken and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann are two coaches that stand out after what Smart said about them. It’s important to note that the whole staff does a great job, but these two coaches do specific things that should excite Dawg nation.
No team is perfect, and trying to get better is a good thing, so if these two can chat with other coaches and find new tools to use — do it.
Whatever can help make Georgia a better overall program is what needs to happen.
The Dawgs are incredibly talented, they recruit well, but Georgia also develops its players to another standard. There is so much good going on in Athens, and it’s great to watch.
Smart gave these two a lot of credit earlier this summer, and hearing what they like doing to make their sides of the ball better should excite many Georgia fans.
“I give a lot of credit to Coach Monken and Coach Schumann. Both of those two guys love getting on Zoom. They love talking to NFL coaches and figuring out a new way to do it,” Smart said in a press conference. “How deep do you play your safety? How do you run your mesh route? What’s something new you’re doing on the inside zone? We’re constantly looking to get better. Our staff does a lot of projects. We’ve got a lot of quality analyst guys that bring a lot of information to our staff and have made us a better program.”
Students of the game and learning how to continue coaching this team to the best of their ability. Georgia coaches get it, especially these two. They also talk to NFL coaches to find out exactly what they want in players.
The Dawgs already produce a lot of incredible talent, but since Monken and Schumann got to campus, the linebackers and the offense have taken off to elite levels. Smart’s words excite us because growing and using different schemes makes it hard to cover Georgia.
Schumann is young, so learning about the game to improve his craft is a considerable strength. Not to mention he has fellow co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Smart to learn from on campus. Monken is a veteran with many NFL contacts, so learning even though he has been in the game a while proves the game is constantly changing.
