The village that won’t wait on government

As Hawke’s Bay councils meet behind closed doors this week to debate a deal to buy out high flood-risk properties, one small Māori community is going it alone. 

The people of Ōmāhu marae know about retreat from the devastation of the floods that periodically sweep down the rivers of Hawke’s Bay. They’ve been here before.
