Save £143 a year on energy bills with ‘particularly effective’ interior decor hack – Express

Heating costs account for around 38 per cent of a person’s yearly energy bill!

Many Britons are unaware that around 10 to 30 per cent of a home’s heat is lost through windows. The interior experts suggested replacing blinds to save as much as £143 a year on energy bills.

As autumn approaches, temperatures across the UK have started to cool down which has been a welcome break for some after months of hot weather. As the cost of living crisis begins to bite, however, families across the UK are desperately looking for cheap ways to keep their homes warm without having to switch the heating on. On average, heating costs account for around 38 per cent of a person’s annual energy bill,.

According to Google Trends, searches for “how to keep your house warm” is currently a breakout trend.
Many Britons don’t know that around 10-30 per cent of a home’s heat is lost through windows, even if they are fitted with double glazing.
Choosing the correct blinds or curtains could significantly reduce the amount of heat lost from windows, saving Britons potentially hundreds of pounds on their annual energy bills.
With this in mind, interior experts at Conservatory Blinds 4 Less have shared their top tips on choosing insulating blinds this winter which could help Britons save cash on their annual energy bills.

The experts said replacing blinds could knock as much as 15 per cent off annual heating bills and with the new price cap at £2,500, replacing blinds could save Britons as much as £143.63 per year.
Measuring blinds precisely is “crucial” when it comes to choosing blinds and curtains, according to Dave Downing on behalf of Conservatory Blinds 4 Less.
He continued: “Blinds must fit snugly against the window, reducing draughts and preventing heat from escaping. When choosing your blinds ensure you choose fabrics and thermal linings as these can improve heat loss dramatically.
“We highly recommend investing in made-to-measure blinds, with a thermal lining as these are most effective at reducing heat loss.”

Those going for curtains should ensure they completely cover the whole window and hang past the base.
Floor-length curtains are “particularly effective” as they reduce the transfer of heat. However, it’s important the curtain does not hang over the radiator as the heat from the radiator will then be in direct contact with the window.
There is a plethora of window furnishings available which can make shopping for blinds and curtains particularly daunting.
Those looking to save money this winter, should opt for roller blinds that have more layers of thermal material and make great insulators.

The experts added: “Honeycomb blinds are also effective in preventing heat from escaping and guarding against draughts.
“They feature individual air pockets, which reduce heat loss through convection and conduction.
“Avoid Venetian and vertical blinds made of vinyl and metal. These blinds look fantastic and offer optimum light control, but are often less energy efficient than other types of blinds.”
The experts said: “Thermal-lined blinds are typically slightly more expensive but are a fantastic investment.

“They feature aluminium-lined honeycomb pockets which trap the air, creating a thermal barrier between the outside of our window and your home’s interior.
“The barrier prevents the warm air inside the room from making contact with the glass, significantly reducing heat loss.”
Keeping blinds cold can “significantly reduce heat loss”. The experts recommended closing blinds when the sun sets and the temperature drops.
On cold, grey days, keep blinds closed to limit sunlight and prevent the escape of heat. On brighter days, open the blinds to allow the sun to heat the room.
