Manchester United out of Champions League, Europe with finale defeat to Bayern Munich

Perhaps it was doomed from the start, but Manchester United’s disastrous UEFA Champions League campaign came to a pitiful end with a 1-0 defeat to group winners Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Erik ten Hag’s side managed just one victory from its six UCL fixtures — a 1-0 home victory against Copenhagen, on a late Harry Maguire header — en route to a last-place finish in Group A. In a group that also featured Galatasaray, Manchester United earned just four points from one win and one draw.

The Red Devils are not only out of the Champions League, but European competition altogether as Galatasaray will instead fall into the Europa League as 3rd-place finishers.

While they were only beaten 1-0 on a goal scored with just 20 minutes remaining, Manchester United were drastically outplayed by Bayern Munich, as they attempted just five total shots (one on target) over the 90 minutes of a must-win game. One of their five shots came from inside the penalty area, from 17 yards out, with everything else coming from 20 yards and beyond.

Man United resisted frustrated Bayern’s superstar attacking unit for the most part, but eventually they found their way through. It was a clever flick by Harry Kane that unlocked the home side’s defense in the 70th minute, sending Kingsley Coman through on goal and one on one with Andre Onana. Coman was strong and decisive with his take, firing inside the far post to end his nearly two-month-long goal drought.

Manchester United focus, team news

Erik ten Hag’s United have been infuriatingly inconsistent so far this season as they followed up a big win against Chelsea with being hammered at home by Bournemouth. Injuries have been an issue but this United side has enough quality to have put themselves in a much better situation than this heading into the final group stage game. Still, they have to go for the win and we should see a very attacking lineup from Erik ten Hag from the start. United literally have nothing to lose and this is a huge week for the club as they also travel to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

OUT: Casemiro (ankle), Lisandro Martinez (foot), Christian Eriksen (knee), Tyrell Malacia (undisclosed), Jadon Sancho (disciplinary – club), Amad Diallo (ineligible as not registered for UCL group stage), Jonny Evans (thigh), Mason Mount (calf) | QUESTIONABLE: Raphael Varane (lower back), Marcus Rashford (illness), Anthony Martial (illness)

Bayern Munich focus, team news

As we mentioned, Tuchel will be smarting after Bayern’s heavy defeat at Frankfurt at the weekend and even though Bayern don’t need anything from this trip to Old Trafford will they still roll out the big guns? It seems like Tuchel may decide not to rest the likes of Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane and Dayot Upamecano for this game as he believes getting a big win against United is more valuable to get Bayern going and have some positive momentum ahead of the Bundesliga’s winter break.

OUT: Serge Gnabry (groin), Matthijs de Ligt (knee), Bouna Sarr (knee, ACL), Sven Ulreich (ankle)
