The Gucci family is an Italian family best known for founding the fashion and design house Gucci. The family traces back to 1921 when Guccio Gucci founded the company in Florence, Italy. The Gucci family became one of the most successful fashion houses in the world, with its products selling in more than 90 countries. After Guccio Gucci, many other family members ran the fashion brand until its acquisition in 1999. But how is the Gucci family tree, and who inherited the Gucci fashion brand?

The Gucci family’s history was tumultuous, characterised by family feuds, legal disputes, and even criminal cases. However, the Gucci family name remains one of the world’s most recognisable and iconic brands. While people start the Gucci family tree from Guccio Gucci, who founded the Gucci brand in 1921, his father, Gabriello Gucci, is worth mentioning. It is from Gabriello that the Gucci family tree becomes clearer.

Who are the real Gucci family members?

The Gucci family tree starts with Gabriello Gucci and his wife, Elena Santini. Gabriello Gucci was an Italian leather craftsman from San Miniato, a town and comune in the province of Pisa, in Tuscany, Italy. His wife Elena came from Lastra a Signa, a municipality in the metropolitan city of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany. The couple welcomed their child Guccio Gucci on 26 March 1881 in Florence, Tuscany, Kingdom of Italy.

Guccio Gucci married his wife, Aida Calvelli, in 1901. The couple had six children, five sons and one daughter. His children are Aldo, Ugo, Vasco, Enzo, Rodolfo, and Paolo. The rest of the Gucci family tree is here:

1. Ugo Calvelli Gucci

Ugo Gucci married Delia Vezzosi. The couple had three children, although much about them remains unknown. Professionally, Ugo had several unspecified roles in the Gucci fashion house. Unfortunately, he died in 1973.

Aldo Gucci was born on 26 May 1905 in Florence, Italy. He is the second-eldest biological son of Guccio Gucci and Aida Calvelli.

Aldo Gucci started working full-time at his father’s company when he was 20 after graduating from San Marco College in Florence. And in 1938, he opened the first Gucci shop in Rome, Italy, outside of Florence.

Giorgio Gucci – (1928 – 2020)

Giorgio Gucci was born in 1928 and is the eldest son of Aldo Gucci. He learnt from his father’s work and became a designer for the Gucci brand. However, he was more interested in horses and spent little time at Gucci. Unfortunately, Giorgio Gucci died in December 2020, aged 92.

Paolo Gucci was born on 29 March 1931 in Florence, Italy. He became the chief designer of Gucci in late 1960, and his father later named him the vice president of Gucci in 1978. In 1980, Paolo left Gucci after secretly launching his business using the Gucci name, resulting in his father and uncle firing him.

But in 1984, he used his cousin Maurizio Gucci to remove his father from the company and reported him to the tax authorities for tax evasion, resulting in his father getting a one-year jail term. In 1987, Paolo sold his Gucci shares. However, he filed for bankruptcy in 1993.

Unfortunately, Paolo Gucci died on 10 October 1995. He left three children, Elisabetta, Patrizia, and Gemma Gucci.

Patricia Gucci is the only daughter of Aldo Gucci, born on 1 March 1963. She worked on Gucci’s Board of Directors before her father sold her share. However, she left the position and founded the travel lifestyle brand Aviteur in 2018. As of 2023, Patricia Gucci is alive and has three children, Alexandra, Victoria, and Isabella Gucci. Her daughters do not have any stake in Gucci.

Rodolfo Gucci is the youngest son of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci. Born on 16 July 1912 in Florence, Italy, Rodolfo was primarily an actor and entrepreneur and appeared in more than 40 films between 1929 and 1946.

When his brother Vasco Gucci died in 1974, Rodolfo and Aldo equally divided the business. However, he did not involve himself in the family business and focused on acting. But after getting the company shares, it resulted in Gucci’s family scandal, whereby Aldo’s children accused him of absenteeism and unworthy of the 50% share of their grandfather’s company.

Unfortunately, Rodolfo Gucci died in Milan in 1983. Before his death, he welcomed only one child, a son named Maurizio Gucci.

Maurizio Gucci

Maurizio Gucci was born on 26 September 1948 in Florence, Italy, to Rodolfo Gucci and Sandra Ravel. When he turned 24 in 1972, he moved to New York City with his uncle Aldo Gucci to work for the Gucci brand in the United States. However, he returned to Milan in 1982 to work at Gucci.

In 1983, he started a legal battle against his uncle Aldo Gucci for 100% control of the Gucci fashion house. Unfortunately, his father passed away in 1983, leaving him his entire 50% stake in Gucci. By 1986, his uncle Aldo Gucci only had a 16.7% stake in Gucci.

But in 1988, Maurizio Gucci sold 47.8% of his Gucci stake to the Bahrain-based investment fund Investcorp and withheld the other 50%. Five years later, he sold his remaining stake to Investcorp. As a result, it ended the Gucci family’s association with the fashion brand.

Unfortunately, Maurizio Gucci died on 27 March 1995, aged 46, after a hitman hired by his ex-wife shot and killed him as he walked up the steps to the entrance of his office in Milan, Italy. Before his death, he welcomed two children, Alessandra Gucci (born in 1977) and Allegra Gucci (born in 1981). Her two daughters eventually inherited his wealth.
