David Skosana, the husband of suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, is a leading proponent of social media posts that are often repeated or amplified by Twitter accounts that show strong support for the so-called Radical Economic Transformation (RET) faction of the ANC.
The RET social media environment includes a host of accounts that target the same individuals and repeat half-truths and misinformation about opponents of certain figures, including Mkhwebane, and has shown a marked loyalty to former president Jacob Zuma.
Skosana, who previously served as the communications director for SuperSport United, was the first to tweet a manipulated image of News24 specialist legal writer Karyn Maughan wearing orange overalls synonymous with South African prison garb with the word “sboshwa” (prisoner) emblazoned over the top of the image.
