Australian and Chinese businesses to engage this weekend in Shanghai

Business Council members will join incoming President Geoff Culbert, Chief Executive Bran Black and the Chair of the Global Engagement Committee Hon. Warwick Smith AO to visit China and engage with the business community this weekend, to support Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit.

“Strengthening business-to-business relationships is vital for Australian businesses, as the Australia-China bilateral relationship stabilises,” Mr Culbert said.

“Trade between nations is a good thing and the BCA welcomes this engagement and the opportunities it brings to grow Australian businesses and create more jobs in Australia,” Mr Black said.

“While this visit is significant, as the Prime Minister has noted, there are still issues to be resolved and we support the Government’s approach on those matters.”

Australia’s bilateral trade with China was worth nearly $300 billion in 2022, accounting for 25 per cent of overall trade.

Australian businesses and the BCA will join the Prime Minister and Chinese counterparts for formal events in Shanghai, followed by participation at a major international import expo.

Prime Minister’s visit to the People’s Republic of China will be the first visit by an Australian Prime Minister since 2016.
